Motorcycles: the only thing as cool as bike!

Moto basics with KTM’s Scott Bright

Last Sunday I took a moto skills clinic with Scott Bright. Scott is the regional KTM sales rep and a pro off-road racer who teaches clinics with pro off-roader Steve Hatch. Scott was raising money to represent the United States at the International Six Days Enduro. Here are some of the things I learned, and some of things Scott reinforced.

Moto riding for an MTBer, Part 1

Hey Lee,

I just got an RM 125 that I plan to use a lot at the MX course in Berthoud. I have never ridden a dirt bike before and I was wondering how the dirt jumps feel with throttle? What are the similarities to regular dirt jumping? Do you hold the throttle all the way up the lip and is there any “pumping” that you do? Once in the air do you always let off the throttle?

Also, when railing berms, or turns in general, do you let off throttle?

We all like motocross

Last week a few of us converged at the Berthoud Motocross Megaplex for our first MX of the year. If I use the words “motocross” and “fun” in the same sentence, it’ll be hella redundant. Hella.

First moto for MTBer

Hey Lee,
I have finally decided that I want to get some sort of dirt bike but not sure what to get. I am 5’7″ and 135 lbs. and I have been riding bmx, slalom, mt cross and dh stuff for a long time (i am 37) but have never ridden a dirt bike. What I want most is a fun bike that is also reliable. I am not planning on doing big jumps or anything probably mostly more like trails and maybe some little table top jumps at most. Stuff at Metcalf and Hollister. I was thinking of a ttr125L, any ideas?
Thanks, Brian

Masters training: Enduro/hare scrambles

My friend Jason Smith is a 40-something high-level moto hare scramble/enduro racer. Last year he placed 3rd in his class in the national series, and he’s an invitee at the Red Bull Last Man Standing. He works 40-50 hours per week and commutes 100 miles per day, and he has a family. This man is busy — here’s how he trains to succeed in his sport.

Great Expectations: Hare scramble madness

A few weeks ago I tried my first motorcycle hare scramble. It was two hours of braaap without expectations; just ripping around and enjoying the experience. I was afraid I’d start to get serious. Well, of course I did.

Epic: Moab 2006

This year’s Thanksgiving adventure didn’t serve the sweet flavors I expected, but it was tasty nonetheless. High/lowlights: a buried van, interpersonal drama, random crashes and a punctured engine case. Sweet? More like savory …

Lee Likes Hare Scrambles

I’ve been trying not to become a motorcycle racer, but I suppose it was inevitable. Today, almost a year after I bought my Honda trail bike, I raced a hare scramble. And I liked it.
