From the archive: Lee Likes backcountry skiing (mostly)

This was originally posted March 14, 2004 — my first winter in Colorado. You’ll see Rufus rocking strong with all four legs.

Backcountry skiing seems pure, like a cross country mountain bike ride: Just haul yourself up a mountain, have a snack then carve down perfect, untracked powder. You have no lift lines and only the bozos you bring with you.

Here’s a convoluted question from our friend Mario in Northern Italy. Shorter stems can be good, but rarely with lower bars.

Stupid human tricks: 90-lb dumbbell hike

You might recall that I’ve been carrying rocks around my neighborhood. I don’t have much patience for indoor exercise, and I enjoy working everything — strength, stability, endurance — at once. I’ve been rocking this workout for the past three weeks.

Riding in San Diego?

Hey Lee,
I am thinking about taking a job in San Diego. Do you know of any good dirt jump parks in the area? Of course accessibility to dirt jumps and good mtb trails is more important than how much I will like the job …
Thanks, Jason

Rock Shox Argyle vs. FOX 32 TALAS?

Hi lee
I am looking to upgrade my forks, I have Fox 32 Talas rlc on my 06 P.2 Cr-Mo. The talas feels flexi, always has, I want a 20 mm front axle what fork would you recommend. I don’t have tons of money. I remember a post where you said the guys from PUSH liked the 318 Argyle. Can you elaborate on that, I see 308, 318 and 409 I believe are the models. Just wandering what your thoughts are.
Thanks and keep on BRAAAPING

Hopey steering damper?

Hey Lee,
Have you tried the Hopey steering damper? It seems like a good idea and I am interested in trying one out, but thought I would get your opinion on it. It seems that if it was a big benefit you would see it more at races?
Thanks, Daniel

MTB vs moto prices: rip-off?

Hey Lee,
I like MTBiking and moto like you, and certainly favour MTB. The question I always have is the prices of MTB. A motor bike is not much dearer than a top of the line MTB. I thought motorbike has a lot more technology and R&D costs associate with it. Are MTB companies just ripping us off?

How to manual – again

Hey lee. I’ve been trying relentlessly to figure out how to manual. For months I can’t seem to get my front wheel high enough, but when I do, I tend to get sideways and lose balance and tip to the side. My pals say I look like I’m too high up but when I get low, I cant seem to lift the wheel.. HELP!! I want so bad to master this trick.
