Identiti 666x Pro for 4X racing?

Hi Lee,

I’m thinking about 4x racing, i’m currently have a Identiti 666x Pro, would this bike make a good 4x racer and would it being a single speed, be a good idea to upgrade to a 8/9 speed. Would i get my ass handed to me if i stay single speed?

Many thanks
shaun

Weightless tire liners

When the goat head thorns came out last fall, I needed some tire liners — but my P.3 is too nimble and tasty for Mr. Tuffies. Enter the Tyvek envelope.

Do this now: Grease your seatpost

Hey Lee,
I think that I may have a serious problem with my bike. The thing is my seat post seams to be stuck inside the seat tube. I maniaged to pull it free but it took two of my buddies to free it. One holding down the bike and two twisting and pulling up on the saddle.

When it came out there was a lot of white powdery substance on and inside the seat post and down inside the seat tube. I suspect that it is a form of corrsion forming from the 2 dissimilar metals. My seat post is 7075 and my from is made form Kinesium Alum. What can I do about this?

Thanks alot, Chris

Bursting brake hose on DeVinci Remix

Hey Lee,

Got “THE BOOK” and its having a positive impact on my riding just need to carve out more riding time! You’ve got me riding flats! Working on skills! Crazy stuff for a long time xc / clipless trail rider. (I can almost wheelie at will!) Anyways, I have a tech question – I have a 05 Devinci Remix and am lovin it for all types of riding.

The rear brake cable kinks and bursts when full travel is used regularly (my winter loop has 3 stair drops 3-4 ft to flat) my summer loops are trail rides so not an issue for most of my riding. Current fix thanks to my LBS is surgical tubing sleeve with loose zip ties – so far so good. Any other ideas in case this doesn’t hold?

Random geometry questions

Hey Lee.
Do longer chainstays give more traction and shorter ones slide easier, or is it the other way around? What other things affect the rear wheel’s traction and sliding abilities? Also, does a steeper head angle give the front wheel more traction just because it puts the rider’s weight more over the front wheel, or would a slacker head angle sometimes give better traction?
Thanks,
Alex

2006 or 2007 TALAS for 2003 Enduro?

Lee,

I am finally settling on buying a Fox Talas RLC fork for my 2003 5″ travel Enduro. Now the 2007 Fox Talas goes right from 120mm to 140mm but the 2006 max’s out at 130.

Should I do a mad hunt for a 2006 Talas and stick to 130mm of travel, or bump it to 140mm in front with a 2007 Talas??? Will this slack the head angle too much??

Thanks!!

Brian

Good street/dirt tires

Hey Lee. I’m currently running the Maxxis HolyRoller tires that came with my street hardtail, but I’d like the bike to be able to corner on dirt and in grass as well as on the pavement. What tires would you recommend? I’m looking for something lightweight, low tread and fast rolling, but still able to carve it up offroad, even if things get a bit slimy. I’ve been recommended things like Larsens, but I was just wondering what all the options are, and what your always genius recommendation would be.
Thanks,
Alex

Gearing for 4x/DS racing

Hey, Lee.
First-Thank you and thank Brian for writing that book! It’s really made me a much better rider and racer.

Second: I’m getting ready for the 2007 4X racing season, and I’m thinking of changing my rear cassette from a MTB (11-32) to the road cassette (11-25), but I’m not sure why I’d do this, other than your book suggests this. I just want to make a good decision before I throw down the cash!

Thank you, Lee!

Dust-proofing a bike for Iraq duty

hey Lee, just a quick one for ya.
I’m in the Army and am deploing to Iraq soon and plan on taking my wheels with me. I have a full suspension bike with a FOX TALAS fork in front and a FOX air shock in back. As you may or may not know it is very dusty over there. What is the best way that I can protect my ride and keep it running smooth? P.S. I plan on consructing myself a nice little pump track while im there. I send ya some pics.

Chain fu: Not for you

Hi Lee,
I have a question about my chain. I’m wondering what the common practice is when you replace a chain? Mine seems a little too slack and jumps off of the front ring. how many if any links should I remove to prevent this from further re-occurences?
Thanks for your help, and I always enjoy all the great info you’ve been throwing out here.
