Lee, I was wondering if you could share with us the method of measuring stem length, and is this method shared by all manufacturers. I am thinking of possibly stretching out the cockpit just slightly on my Giant STP, and was thinking maybe a slightly longer stem and possibly just a tad more rise in […]
Hey Lee, I love the book — every time I ride, I pick out something to work on and try to nail it. But I’m curious… I want to try a shorter/higher stem to improve my descending and (small) drops. The book says to try 40-70mm and 10-15 degree rise for this purpose. My bike […]
Hi Lee: I’ve been feeling too stretched out and too far forward on my bike. I want to get a shorter stem but I have a Cannondale and they’re pretty expensive, so I want to get the right one. I have a 120mm stem now. Not sure if this is a daft question, but can […]
Sergio is ripping a technical singletrack in Brazil called Dircuito das Pontes, and he’s wondering about his cockpit length. With video …
Lee, I’m reading your section on doing wheelies – very helpful. I saw the note about going to shorter stem to aid in doing wheelies. I have a 100mm stem. Is there a downside to going to shorter stem? thanks, Rick
Hi Lee, I keep hearing you say “….Longer is more XC-able; shorter is more braaapable and a longer bike with a shorter stem is a great compromise.” You said the same thing in your book! I believe you but I never really understand why. …
Here’s a convoluted question from our friend Mario in Northern Italy. Shorter stems can be good, but rarely with lower bars.
Lee, I’m taking your advice and installing a shorter stem. My question is “how short is too short?” I’m riding a Giant Trance with a 110mm stem; would going straight to a 40mm stem be too big a change? Or just too short for the bike? Thanks! Dan
Hi Lee, Love your book, love your site and can’t wait for the DVD. I have a question for you. I have an 2007 Giant Anthem 1. I have recently started racing XC. I was toying with the idea of purchasing an Anthem Advance but have come up with this question. I am 6’2 and […]
Lee, I am currently riding a Thomson 90mm w/5 degree rise on my 575 and have considered trying a shorter stem. Unfortunately none of my friends or any of the local shops have one for me to demo. I do, however, have a 2″ riser bar that I purchased at a swap meet but have […]
Lee, I have two questions about proper bike fit that, unfortunately, the first chapter of your book did not cover: (1) how important is standover height?; and (2) how do you determine the proper top-tube length?
