Public comment: Betasso Preserve and Benjamin Property

Betasso is a nice XC spot with a fun downhill just outside Boulder, CO. The adjoining Benjamin property has been acquired by the city, and the city has begun preparing its management plan. This is our chance to participate in the planning process.

Rider Safety Acts?

Lee,
I just read the “I want to build the next Whistler” entry and wanted to ask about liability with the ski resorts.

Colorado has laws that limit a ski resorts liability in case a skier gets hurt. Do these laws extend to mountain biking at the resort. From my understanding the ski industry would barely exist without the protection the ski resorts get from these limited liability laws. In order to promote growth of mountain biking maybe these laws should be amended to include cycling.

Software for diagramming tracks, Part 2

Hey Lee –

The Colorado School of Mines cycling team recently gained permission to build a ds course, pump track, and stxc on a fairly large patch of land owned by the school. I need to present them with a diagram of both the ds and pump track prior to construction. A diagram similar to those you put together would fit the bill perfectly. What software do you use? Any tips?

I really appreciate the help,

– Brandon

“I want to build the next Whistler”

Lee,
I recently moved to a small mountain resort town to work for the local ski hill. The ski area itself is mostly on forest service land. They seem to see bikes as a pest, especially with all the “renegade trails” being built on the hill by riders who are tired of no real access other than one old mining trail.

How do I get the ski area’s backing to not only lobby the forest service, but to open a lift and maintain some trails. I know the guy in the company who could make it happen, but he wants a “master plan” for the forest service. How do I turn this place into Whistler.

Speaking of which, they told me we would need a bike patrol. Yet, most of the places I have ridden downhill at in this region didn’t seem to have this. Why?

Thanks,
GP

MTB park in Denver?

Lee,
Ft.Collins has two mountain bike parks, Boulder has a few, and now I think c-springs has something, not to mention leadville and durango and all the other mountain towns. Ever hear of anyone getting the ball rolling in Denver? I’m wondering if there’s a wagon I can jump on, or if I should try to start something for next spring or summer. If so, any suggestions you have on getting it going would be great, I think I might have some lines on it, but any input would be great. Thanks alot for your time, Mike Winston

Baseball dirt for a pump track?

Lee,
I am in the planning stages for a pumptrack at our local trails and was wondering if the red dirt, like what is used for baseball diamonds, would work well for a track or should I stick with top soil.
Thanks,
Evan
