Connecting the dots
In a former life I was a newspaper infographics artist. When a plane crashed, I drew the inside of the engine and highlighted the whatchamacallit that failed. On hindsight, it was a cool job, but at the time I was too anguished that I wasn’t a full time bike rider/writer. When I won a Pulitzer in 1998 I didn’t give a damn. I needed to win an expert DH national.
Well doodle-ee-doo. Here we are. But I still use my infographics kung fu: the book, magazine articles, this site and — yesterday — installation directions for GAMUT chainguides. What a neat way to leverage my writing, info-design and bike knowledge, and to help some cool dudes.

Why did I post this?
1. In his 2005 commencement address at Stanford, Apple Computer founder Steve Jobs said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.” Full text
2. I like this kind of work, and I’m pretty good at it. If you need tasty installation instructions or user manuals or whatever, email me.
Lee,
That is a great article by Jobs. Thanks for the link…
Keith
Great speach by Jobs…I just wish I had the balls to do what he says.

James, nice! All fixed. So much for my journalistic excellence. I did the work in 1997 …
Covering the midwest floods.
Very good stuff, I like the advice (particularly as an old beginner with insufficient skills) “Stay hungry. Stay foolish”
Dude as always you inspire me to be better at everything not just a bike rider.
Oh and loved your bit in Hypnosis ya nutter………
Hey Lee, this is a much needed project. I just purchased and installed a new Gamut P20 chain guide and was less than impressed with the instructions. Absolutley great product, by the way. Set up was fast and easy and it looks so much better than those ugly orange rollers from the other brands. Another bonus is they are a local brand (local to me) and I always like to support the LBS and brands.
Keep the rubber side down-
Lee,
I’m a huge fan of Dr. Wayne Dyer and reading the Steve Jobs commencement address was inspiring and so well put.
Keep up the great work with all you’re doing ! I love your web site, oh, and your book was awesome.
p.s. when are you going teach some classes up in the New England area ??
Hey Mike.
I won’t be out there this year. Perhaps next year. Have you considered a trip to CO? We have some nice little mountains here …
