Pump track: sandy dirt for a wet climate
Hi Lee,
I’m building a pump track in the PNW where the soil is essentially always wet. What do you think an ideal soil mix would be? Would 60% sand / 40% clay be a good balance? Could I go with even more sand?
Thanks!
Alex
Hi Alex,
That sounds good. According to the soil triangle, that’ll be “sandy clay.”
I fear that 30% clay won’t pack well enough for a pump track.
Here’s a crazy idea: Go out to a sweet local trail that drains and packs well, then test that dirt with a mason jar. That procedure is described in the Pump Track Nation book.
I hope that’s helpful,
Lee
Thanks for the advice Lee! Hadn’t thought of testing out the local trails. I actually live a few minutes away from Duthie Hill which has a sweet pump track, will test the dirt around there!
