CUTTING MAXXIS MINIONS FOR WET/LOOSE

Some of you have asked about custom-cutting Maxxis Minion downhill tires. Here’s a trick for your next East Coast national.

A pair of Maxxis Minions will take you far and fast on most dirt — hard, medium or loose. If you find yourself facing an extra-muddy or extra-dusty course, try opening up the tread by removing these shoulder knobs:

A while back, Decline magazine ran a detailed story on this topic. Check through that pile of mags in your bathroom.

Have fun,

I’ve found the mod you described for the DHR is better in every condition, not just extra loose or wet. I run all of my DHR’s cut in that way. The only downside is that they wear faster. The DHF has always been so good for me that I’ve never spent much time messing with it. Maybe I’ll give it a go.

By the way, Grand Junction/Fruita is STILL under 4+ inches of snow. I’ll let you know when things clear up, you need to come over and check out our new trail! It’s really fun!

What can you say about not cutting off those knobs but instead making a deep and wide groove with a penknife on them? thanks for your time answering all those questions!!
I bought your book a year ago and It has been like having Brian and you next to me… but I would like to know if you have published it translated to spanish.
My fellow riders down here in Colombia(and latin america and Spain) would be stoked to have a translated edition of it. good luck

I guess that might help cornering. It would add another edge.

    Hello again,
I have found out that the wetscream are those tires the mechanics and racers like to cut the spikes down! could you explain that practice to me? how low do they cut them and for what situation? are just wetscreams(spike tires) and minions stripped of their spikes(knobs)?? thanks for help!!

You can cut Wet Scream center knobs to make the tires roll faster and squirm less as the track dries. Say you’re racing DS on a rainy day. You might start with stock Wet Screams, then clip them as the track gets faster.

Racers and mechanics clip all sorts of tires. There are endless options.
