Vans Skate Park

OK, the Vans Skate Park in Milpitas kicks ass.

We're talking bowls, ramps, boxes, indoors, outdoors and even birthday parties. It's all here, and it's all for bikes each Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday 8-10 p.m. The density of possibilities is rivaled only by the density of Sunday's crowd.

Half pipe of doom
The competition vert ramp is 12 feet high, with a few feet of pure vert. When you're peering in from the coping, a drop-in seems like a really bad idea. Matt V was uncharacteristically skittish, but after some looking he went for it and -- I didn't say this at the time -- got awfully close to landing flat bottom.

Just riding up and down looks superfun -- until the world starts to spin. Curtis Keene.

  Huge.

Wave pool
Three rollers terminating in a quarter pipe encouraged various flavors of funny business.

Street course, of course
Multi-level quarter pipes face off across fun box central. The boys were boosting some nice airs.

Matt V with the mega transfer.

Mickey Mouse bowl
I doubt that's the real name, but the twin micro bowls at the end of the main bowl look like the rodent's ears. Curtis was cleaning out the wax.

Let's have some fun with math: In the closeup shot, Curtis is leaning 68 degrees. Assuming the bowl's radius is eight feet, a scary looking equation tells us:
  • He's going about 18 mph.
  • He's pulling 2.6 Gs! His carcass is pressing almost 500 pounds onto that Specialized SX.

  • Pro bowl
More like a swimming pool, really. Five feet deep at the shallow end and 12 feet deep at the business end. The guys were railing the back bowl. Matt had to jump straight out of it. Goofball.
