James Wilson is a professional strength trainer and a dedicated mountain biker who lives and rips in Grand Junction, CO. James understands the demands of our sport — and our desire to ride rather than lift.

Since I started using his highly detailed Ultimate MTB Workout Program, I’ve been asking James for a more streamlined program that:

James demonstrates the two key strength exercises at his gym.

- Is simple and easy to follow.

- Does not require gym equipment.

- Is as time-efficient as possible.

- Achieves all of the key goals — mobility, strength, strength endurance, anaerobic fitness — all at once.

- Has a low price.

James’s new MTB DB Combo Workout Program meets all these requirements and more.

All you need is a chair, a broomstick, a pair of adjustable dumbbells (the DB in the program’s name) and a small area of floor. The MTB DB Combo program works you using 11 warmup exercises, two strength exercises and two four-exercise dumbbell drills. The two strength exercises are single-leg deadlifts and side raises.

- Single-leg deadlifts build overall strength, especially in the hips, and they train you to be comfortable and powerful in your Attack Position. James: “Way too often these days, people are looking to be entertained rather than trained. You want a master’s mindset. You want to concentrate on perfect movements, to be perfect and strong.”

- Side raises strengthen your torso and shoulder girdle in a very integrated way. As James says, “Pressing a weight over head is a lost art. That is the true essence of upper body strength.”

When you add the dumbbell drills, each workout works your entire body and takes less than 45 minutes. The manual spells everything out. All you have to do is follow James’ instructions — and get strong.

Price: $17

I met James at a mountain bike camp in Fruita, CO. He is the real deal. For that matter, so is Gene Hamilton, who conducted the camp.

How many times a week is recommended for this workout? I need more strength to get some pop off lips and pump on rollers at the end of a ride as well as in the first hour!

Two or three times a week. James says three is ideal, but two will give you results, especially if you’re also riding a lot.
